Hi,
I am studying for a social work MSW degree in Scotland. I am enjoying it a lot and would like to meet social workers from other countries to share experiences.
At the moment as there is a huge migrant community here, I am doing a lot of work with migrant children, group work, community work, supporting people with alcohol/domestic violence problems.
After I graduate I will have three options:
-community care (mental health, disability, older people)
- criminal justice
- children and families social work
I initialy inteded to work for children and families department but it seems these jobs are the most stressful and I am a bit worried about it.
What are your choices of statutory social work after you graduate from an MSW degree in staturory and voluntary organisations?
Is it quite common to move from one area of sw to another e.g. from criminal justice to children and families?
any experiences you would like to share would be great
many thanks
kasia

Re: social worker from UK

Very seldom do social workers leave grad school with a specialty. Often, it is something that develops over time. Most clinicians work in all areas. I work for a non-profit agency where I work with all kinds of folks and all kinds of issues from substance abuse to families.
In the area I am at.. most of the folks who are in criminal justice are trained in that field. (mostly) Probation officers and the like...
For the Doctorate program you can choose, administration, education, etc.
One of my friends was just in Glasgow for a conference. How are social workers seen over there? Is it a respected position?

Sun, April 8, 2007 - 5:54 PMHi,
thanks for replying. Are you thinking of doing a doctorate?
I am not sure but I think a lot of social workers do not feel apprieciated and respected. I get a feeling that social workers are overworked and stressed out. They often take their work home with them...
I am a bit worried as I have to do 2 years for the local authority....
What about you? Are you enjoying it?

Re: social worker from UK
Mon, April 9, 2007 - 4:11 AMWell, we don't do it for the pay
:-) We do it for the love of the work.
(at least that is what I tell myself on those rare days I don't want to go to work)
:-)
I have learned never to take my work home... I leave the office.. I leave. I think the reason for being stressed out, is allowing yourself to be stressed out. I work for a non-profit substance abuse agency. I have to look at it in terms of how many folks are being helped as opposed to how many are not. There are also many directions. Not every social worker is in child protective services. There are options:
hospital, elder and disabled care, adoption, private practice, schools.. on and on. If one feels burnt, there is a whole new direction to go. I have always been in direct service.
I don't have any plans right now for a Doctorate.. I just don't have the time to devote to it.
:-)
